Suryani Senja

Managing Director, CULT Gallery Director and Trustee, Yayasan Hasanah

Suryani is a cultural expert and social justice advocate with 30 years of experience across law, policy, and the arts. She is leading the conceptualisation of the Merdeka Textile Museum, a major cultural space in Kuala Lumpur under PNB. She is a founding Board Member of Think City, Khazanah Nasional’s urban regeneration arm, and is a Trustee of Yayasan Hasanah. She founded Cult Gallery, which promotes contemporary Southeast Asian art. Suryani has significantly shaped Malaysia’s socio-cultural landscape, championing gender equality through law reform and revitalising traditional crafts. As Chairperson of the National Craft Corporation, she led the digitisation of Malaysian crafts with Google Arts & Culture and rebranded crafts through storytelling. As Chairperson of the Tuanku Nur Zahirah Foundation, she modernized traditional textiles through design innovation. Her earlier career spans corporate law and investment banking in Malaysia, London, and Singapore, including practicing international law at the UN in Geneva. She was Group General Counsel at AirAsia, Senior Vice President at Khazanah Nasional, and was a policy advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office. Suryani holds law degrees from the International Islamic University and the London School of Economics. She completed leadership programs at Harvard and Oxford universities. She is a fellow of the WEF Young Global Leaders and Asia 21 Young Leaders.

Kelingkan is a delicate traditional Malay embroidery technique that uses fine metallic threads to create shimmering floral and geometric motifs, often on shawls or veils worn during weddings and special occasions. With roots in Melaka and Penang, Kelingkan reflects the finesse and grace of Malay craftsmanship. As part of its mission to preserve Malaysia’s intangible cultural heritage, Yayasan Hasanah is working with artisans and cultural groups to revive this fading art form. Join our workshop to learn the intricate technique of Kelingkan and be part of preserving a piece of our cultural legacy!

Telepuk is a stunning traditional Malay textile art that features intricate gold leaf or metallic motifs pressed onto fabric, once reserved for royalty and special ceremonies. This craft embodies the richness of our cultural heritage. Through its cultural preservation efforts, Yayasan Hasanah is bringing Telepuk back to life, supporting local artisans and ensuring the technique is passed down to future generations.
