Global Executive Director, J-PAL (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab), MIT

Iqbal Dhaliwal is the Global Executive Director of J-PAL, the anti-poverty research center at MIT’s economics department. He oversees the organization’s global strategy, operations, and policy influence across sectors like health, education, labor, and climate change in over a dozen countries. He also co-directs the Partnership for AI Evidence, focusing on evaluating AI’s potential in social programs. Previously a member of India’s prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Iqbal implemented development programs and helped formulate public policy. He has also worked in strategic consulting in the private sector. Iqbal sits on the boards of Noora Health and Rocket Learning and advises Unilever’s Sustainability Council. He holds an MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and an MPA in International Development from Princeton University. A top-ranked civil servant, he earned the Director’s Gold Medal at the National Academy of Administration and was honored by the Government of Punjab for contributions to poverty alleviation.
